When I first told people I was planning to photograph the birth of my son, an act that made perfect sense to me, I was met with a few quizzical and some outright horrified looks.
I’ve had a number of photographic ideas I haven’t followed through with, bailing at the last minute due to fear or uncertainty. I’ve always greatly regretted these moments, realizing later they would have made engaging photographs. So I was determined to stick to my guns on this.
The gut feeling paid off, as an image was selected for the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2014 and exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery.
The credit goes to an incredibly beautiful and brave sitter, my wife. Without a hint of self-consciousness, she allowed me to photograph the birth in its entirety.
